Musicians/Instructors:

Jeremy S. Brown, Saxophone

Dr. Jeremy Brown is a Professor and past Head of the Music Department at the University of Calgary where he teaches saxophone and conducting. As a saxophonist and woodwind specialist, he has performed professionally with many artists including Johnny Mathis, Paul Anka, Mel Torme, Bob Hope, Holly Cole, musicals such as “Chorus Line”, “West Side Story”, “Showboat”, “Wizard of Oz”, and has performed as a soloist with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the Kensington Sinfonia as well as many other orchestras and bands.

Kodi Hutchinson, Bass

Kodi Hutchinson has been active on the Western Canadian Jazz Scene since 1992. He received his Bachelor’s degree in 1995 from the U of C. He has worked extensively with groups such as Terrain (Jazz/Fusion), ClanTerra (Celtic), and The Great Gavalan (Pop) and Karl Roth (Jazz). Most recently, Kodi has recorded with Vancouver based Jazz Vocalist Laura Crema with a band including Boss Brass Pianist Dave Restivo and Drummer Owen Howard.

Pat Belliveau, Saxophone

Pat Belliveau is on the faculty at the University of Calgary, teaching jazz saxophone, jazz harmony, and jazz improvisation. Pat is a co-founder and past “Vice-President” of the “Calgary Jazz Association” (CJazz) and is presently a member of the “artistic committee” for the annual “CJazz Festival”. Pat has an extensive performing background which has involved numerous performances at international jazz festivals in Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg.

Keith Smith, Guitar

Keith Smith is a freelance guitarist in Calgary, Alberta. He leads the Keith Smith Trio, and is a resident member of  The Amos Garret Jazz Trio, The Prime Time Big Band, Lorna MacLachlin Quintet, the Penny Sanborn Trio and The Northern Lights Quartet. He also shows up in situations as diverse as The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra , Phil Dwyer's , Hugh Frazer's and Ross Taggart's performances for The Jazz Is Society of Alberta. He has performed across Canada and in Scotland, China and Mongolia.

Derek Stoll, Piano

Derek Stoll obtained a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from the University of Calgary. He has composed works for concert band, jazz band, small ensembles and solo instruments, and has been commissioned by the Canadian Brass and the Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show. He studied jazz and brass performance at the Banff Centre. He has performed with countless groups in the Calgary area including the Bob Day Quartet, Terrain, Prime Time Big Band, Verismo, Masacote and The Real Deal.

John deWaal, Drums

John deWaal was born in Calgary, Alberta. John has played with an impressive roster of international jazz luminaries. This includes Rosemary Clooney, David Friesen, Sheila Jordan, Rob McConnell, Marian McPartland, Maria Schneider, Bobby Shew and Bill Watrous, among others. He has performed at several international jazz festivals; highlights include the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and the Montreal Jazz Festival. Since 1979, he has owned and operated de Waal Music Studio. He maintains a full teaching schedule and conducts drum clinics and work- shops in and around the Calgary area.

Brian Walley, Trombone

Brian Walley has been freelancing in Calgary since high school. He is a graduate of the University of Calgary. He has played with the Calgary Stampede Grandstand Band, Ice Capades, productions of South Pacific, A Chorus Line and Tom Foolery. He has appeared with Harry Connick Jr., Red Skelton, Hal Linden, Diana Krall, Joan Rivers, Holly Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Rosemary Clooney, P.J. Perry, Cheryl Fisher, Hugh Fraser, and k.d.Lang. He was a charter member of Eric Friedenberg’s Saturday Pro Band, and plays lead trombone in the Prime Time Big Band. He is an active clinician and currently performs with all manner of groups playing everything from weddings to the Bizarre Ball.

Allistair Elliott, Trumpet

Allistair Elliott was born just outside Belfast, Northern Ireland. Excelling
at the classical side of the trumpet, he performed in London, England and
also Vienna, Austria by the age of seventeen. Elliott moved to England where
he received his music degree from Leeds College of Music.
Over the course of his extensive career, Allistair has been involved
performing with or recording for Tim Tamishiro, Livin¹ In Swing, Steve
Pineo, Amos Garrett, The Prime Time Big Band, The Big Beat Band, and The
Barry Shaw Orchestra, as well as fronting his own group. Allistair was
nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year as well as Wind Instrumentalist of
the Year. In March 2008, Allistair was presented with the award for Wind
Instrumentalist of the Year.
